The name "Dot" represents far more than a person—it represents the values that define our organization: compassion, dignity, generosity, hope, resilience, unformidable strength, and unconditional care. Just as a single dot is the beginning of every line, every journey, and every destination on a map, The DOT House believes every woman's path toward stability begins with one moment of hope, one act of compassion, and one opportunity to begin again.

By naming the organization after Dorothy "Dot" Toler, we honor her legacy while creating a place where every woman is treated with the same kindness and respect she extended to others throughout her life.

The Vision Behind the Mission

Turning Compassion Into Action

After seeing how easily women can fall into homelessness—and how many remain unseen because they are living in hotels, vehicles, overcrowded homes, or unsafe environments—Monique "Mo" Hughes knew there had to be another way.

As a divorced mother of three, Mo understands the weight of carrying a family while wondering how everything will come together. She remembers the reality of living paycheck to paycheck, carefully stretching every dollar, making difficult choices, and worrying each month about whether she and her children would have enough to make it through. While her family's circumstances were different from those of many women experiencing homelessness, those experiences gave her a deep appreciation for the strength, resilience, and determination it takes to keep moving forward when life feels uncertain.

Those experiences shaped her compassion and reinforced her belief that every woman deserves support before a crisis becomes overwhelming. She believes women shouldn't have to lose everything before someone reaches out to help.

Inspired by the legacy of her mother, Dorothy "Dot" Toler, Mo founded The DOT House to provide immediate care, practical support, and compassionate guidance while working toward a larger vision of creating a transitional home where women can heal, rebuild, and regain stability.

The DOT House exists because every woman deserves more than survival—she deserves the opportunity to begin again.
